Department of Biological Sciences - Westoby Lab
Opportunities to join the lab
The Westoby Ecology and Evolution Lab at Macquarie University in Sydney has opportunity to recruit talented researchers, arising through award of an Australian Laureate Fellowship “Evolutionary Ecology of Vegetation”. Applicants will be considered in the following areas:
- Hydraulics, growth, breakage and nutrient economy compared across plant species. Skills with plant ecophysiology, soils and vegetation fieldwork would be well-regarded.
- Evolutionary cost-benefit theory for plant traits. Needs mathematical and programming talent as well as insight into plant processes.
- Quantitative plant anatomy. Needs skills in microscopy and image analysis, to develop faster and better methods for quantifying anatomical features in sapwood and other tissues.
- Informatics for ecology and evolution. Needs strong programming skills. There is opportunity to develop software that will be widely adopted for research internationally.
People can be appointed at a range of levels from recent Honours graduate through to postdoctoral research associate or professional officer. Scholarships are also available for people wishing to pursue a PhD. The main criterion will be strong research potential, as indicated by academic record or past research accomplishments or the opinion of referees or publication track record.
If interested please email Samantha.Newton@mq.edu.au. Send CV, academic record (photocopy is fine at this stage), and names and phone numbers for academic referees. Tell us briefly for how long you would be interested to join the lab and where it would fit in your research career.
