The clever plant grows each year,
A fresh cohort of leaves, a new clutch of seeds.
This may not seem unusual. However,
Many things distinguish this plant as clever.

The clever plant allocates resources wisely
And spends its nitrogen well.
Its seeds are of a perfect size;
Its architecture, perfectly derived.

This plant deals with any contingency
It will recover from grazing, easily.
It knows well its flammability
And is unfazed by herbivory.

If a response to drought should be required
The clever plant still is to be admired.
By estimating probability
It finds a solution salutary.

There can be no doubt, whatever
That through tireless endeavour
This plant has become very, very clever
