Current position

Honorary research associate in the school of Biological Sciences. I have done a number of vegetation surveys in Australia, along the temperate east coast, the semi-arid zone of NSW and the northern seasonal tropics. Much of my past research in Australia has been on plant species richness and the occurrence of myrmecochory as a dispersal mechanism in sclerophyll vegetation. Present research interests include the ecology of hummock grasses (Triodia species). Hummock grasses formerly in the genus Plectrachne are now included in Triodia (Lazarides, M. 1997. Aust. Syst. Bot. 10 (3):381-489.)

Recently I and colleagues at University of Melbourne and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney have developed a website to collect and collate "first event" phenological records in Australia. The aim is to encourage enthusiastic plant, bird, frog and insect watchers to join in a community effort to document first events and to follow over time variation which may be related to climate or weather. Although our first efforts are focused on Australia we hope that other Southern Hemisphere observers will also contribute records on the plants and animals in their countries. Find out more about BioWatch and sign up to be an observer!
