Project description

My research project investigates the immune system of the Sydney rock oyster ( Saccostrea glomerata ) ,using a proteomics approach (2D-electrophoresis & peptide mass fingerprinting). Specifically, I am investigating the mechanisms underlying resistance to infection by the parasite, Martelia sydneyi , which results in QX disease. QX disease results in devastating economic losses in the local aquaculture industry. The genes encoding the proteins discovered in this project may serve as genetic markers of QX-resistance in oysters. The dataset may prove valuable for on-going efforts to breed QX-resistant oysters in Australia.
