Plant Ecology Researchers

During the first months of 2003 we hope to appoint new people to the research group. Their role will be to press forward our new ARC-funded project on plant species economics and strategy-dimensions of plant ecology. The positions could be suitable for people who have recently completed strong honours degrees. They give opportunity to broaden experience, to assess whether and where to undertake a PhD, and to carry through some good research to publication. Applicants at any career stage from bachelor’s degree onwards will be given serious consideration, however.

We are willing to consider both full-time and part-time positions, and also to be flexible about starting dates. It would be helpful if you could explain in your application whether you have needs or preferences in this regard. If you are an overseas applicant, we need to know about your visa status.

Formal application procedure is described in the advert, along with salary details. (The positions are offered at HEW level 5.) Our most important criterion is strong research potential. You must send an academic record with grades. We would like to know about anything else that makes your case for strong research potential, such as past research accomplishments or the opinion of your referees. With regard to particular skills, experience in any of botanical fieldwork, identification, morphology, physiology, demography, computing, or evolutionary theory would be an advantage. Ability to prepare research for publication would be well regarded.

Lab members are expected to make themselves responsible for a research strand and to drive it forward energetically, including interpretation and first-authoring publications. At the same time they are expected to talk through their design and results with Mark Westoby and with other lab members on a regular basis.

Any enquiries concerning the position or your application can be referred to Ms. Robyn Delves on (02) 9850 8153 or rdelves@rna.bio.mq.edu.au

Positions are available for a period of one year in the first instance, with the possibility of further appointment subject to funding and satisfactory performance.
