New Staff
New PhD student: Maurizio Benelli
“Maurizio Benelli is a new cotutelle PhD student from University of Bologna who will be based in Biological Sciences throughout 2016, supervised by Phil Taylor and Fleur Ponton. His interests include the development of mass rearing techniques for insects, their storage at low temperature and utilization in environmentally benign pest control strategies. Maurizio’s PhD project focuses on cold-storage of Queensland fruit flies in order to facilitate large-scale production and supply for release programs. He is also interested in basic questions of how temperature shock can delay ageing and increase subsequent stress tolerance. He will be based in W19F.”
New research fellow: Kate Mitchell
“Kate Mitchell is a new Research Fellow working with Phil Taylor’s group, who will also contribute to research in Darrrell Kemp’s group. Her project focuses on expression and mechanisms underlying stress resistance in Queensland fruit flies. Kate’s research interests include the adaptive potential and phenotypic plasticity of stress resistance traits as well as the factors influencing dispersal ability in Tephritid flies. She joins us following a post-doc position with John Terblanche in South Africa where she worked on environmental stress in the Mediterranean fruit fly, and before that a PhD on adaptive potential and phenotypic plasticity of upper thermal limits in thermal tolerance in Drosophila with Ary Hoffman and Carla Sgro at University of Melbourne. ”
