General News and Announcements
School Liaison and Outreach position
Do you want to inspire the next generation of biology students? The department has a 1-day per week position available for an enthusiastic and energetic person to be the school liaison and outreach officer. This important role will continue to strengthen and expand the Department’s school liaison and outreach programs. The position involves working with our partnership schools to organise school visits and liaising with the Faculty’s marketing people and department staff for outreach activities.
Essential: enthusiasm for all things biological and for working with schools, teachers and the general public.
Desirable: understanding of the school system and science / biology curriculum
Contact Michelle Leishman or Sharyon O’Donnell for more information. Applications addressing the criteria plus a short CV should be submitted to fse.bio-hod@mq.edu.au by COB 10th February.
“Take 3” this weekend
Heading to the beach or outdoors this weekend?
Help reverse the recent increase in litter in our special places and take an extra 3 pieces of litter with you when you go home.
Check out www.take3.org for more information
Biology Book Nook
The Book Nook in the biology tearoom has some great new books available. I’m guessing a few Christmas presents and holiday reading that need new homes.
How about Alan Cumming – Not my Father’s Son? Or Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster? Have a look and take a book; or bring in your own contributions to the shelf.
Great fruit and Vegetables
Looking for an alternative to the supermarket giants for fresh fruit and veg?
Want to buy local and seasonal, but don’t want to drive to Flemington on the weekend?
Try Harvest Hub
Orders are delivered on Wednesday mornings to the Biology Tearoom.
Flexible ordering system: you can custom order, or take a standard bag and exclude items you don’t like. You don’t have to order every week.
For more information visit the website, or email samantha.newton@mq.edu.au

Women Making a Difference!
We would like to invite all the women who work in our faculty to contribute 2 photos and a brief description of your passion for science and your work for the website celebrating women in STEM “making a difference”. We are keen to include women at different career stages and in different roles – including in particular professional staff and early career women as well as more senior women. The photo could be a selfie in the field or lab, or could be a professional photo – we are seeking a variety of styles.
Please send your photos and descriptions to Rajni.prasad@mq.edu.au
Art/Science Collaboration Opportunity
There is an opportunity for scientists to participate in a community project with artists around western Sydney (Blacktown) as part of CoLABS. More information about CoLabs is attached.
There are several artists looking to collaborate with scientists, and the level of involvement could vary from project to project.
· Artist wants to map human movement through space – looking for astronomer
· Artist wants to create a turf or ground maze that maps indigenous history – agricultural scientist/horticulturalist
· Artist searching for a vet scientist
· Artist wants to create a giant sundial – has suggested she’d like to work with an ecologist and landscape architect
Please note that Expression of Interest close Friday 3 February. If you are interested, please contact the organiser directly. Pip can be reached at pip@colabs.org.au
