ASSCR NSW local symposium “From Discovery to Translational Science”
To be held on the 14th of May 2021 at the Westmead Education Conference Centre, J L Auditorium, Level 2 at Westmead Hospital. Don’t miss out – the deadlines for oral abstract submission is this Friday 26th March 2021.
The symposium is aimed at Early Career Researchers (ECR – PhD Student and postdoc level) to promote networking and showcase their basic and translational science in a wide range of fields. To support ECRs career development, most participants will be given the opportunity to present their research in long (10+5 min) or flash (3+2 min) talks.

ASSCR ECR Symposium NSW 2021 (hyperlinked)
The Laura Bassi Scholarship, which awards a total of $8,000 thrice per annum, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed. The scholarships are open to every discipline and the next round of funding will be awarded in April 2021:

All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of full-time employment. Applicants are required to submit a completed application form along with their CV through the application portal by the relevant deadline. Student Fieldwork Volunteers Wanted: Smart Green Cities and Strathfield Council ‘Greening Our City’ Project
Start: mid-April 2021
Hours: 5-6 hours per week for 5-6 weeks (can be split between students)
Expressions of Interest: close 31 March. All EoI to be emailed to Jerusha Beresford, Smart Green Cities (Jerusha.beresford@mq.edu.au)
Tasks;
- Working alongside horticulturists, the Parks Manager and contractors during on-site tree planting
- On-site tree identification and data collection on tree metrics
- Input data into a spreadsheet for reporting to the government on the ‘greening our city’ grant
- Input data into ‘itree’ software for the Council’s tree asset list

David Syme Research Prize – applications open
Nominations are invited for the 2020 David Syme Research Prize. The Australia-wide prize recognises the best original research in Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Geology produced in Australia during the past two years (1 January 2019 – 31 December 2020).
Value: $9,000 (approx.)
Closing date: 28 April 2021

The prize is made by nomination only. Senior members of the academic or research community such as co-authors or co-researchers, or heads of department are invited to nominate eligible colleagues. Self-nominations are not accepted.

- Must NOT have attained the position of Professor (or equivalent seniority) by the time the award is made;
- Must have spent the equivalent of at least 5 full years of the last 7 in Australia.
The award is made on the basis of the research quality within the discipline and its likely impact and value in the industrial and commercial interests of Australia.

HDR – Grants
Australian Graduate Women PhD fellowships
Two Barbara Hale ($9000) and one Gerogina Sweet ($8000, STEM only) fellowships are available to 2nd-year or later PhD candidates “to facilitate a research project that will extend the nature and/or scope of the currently approved PhD program and the specialised knowledge and skills of the applicant“. See AGW website for details and to apply. Applications due 30 April 2021.
Evolution virtual conference– student awards
Conference runs 21-25 June from 2pm GMT (= 22-26 June from 12 midnight AEST), with some talks pre-recorded and available to view at other times. Student registration USD$50/USD$10 for members.
Members of the Society for the Study of Evolution or Society of Systematic Biologists may apply for student awards as part of talk submission. Note: society membership cannot be paid through any MQ account. Talk submissions due 15 April (for awards).
Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association virtual conference – student awards
Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (US) – various awards
Applications are now open for the Tony Price Award, open to all postgraduate students (PhD and MRES). The award supports ecological research on or related to plants by providing funding up to $2,500 p.a. for postgraduate students in the department to support activities such as fieldwork and conference attendance.
This scheme is supported by a bequest to the Department of Biological Sciences by Greville Anthony (Tony) Price (1934-2010), who was a student at Macquarie in the 1980’s.
The application form is to be signed and emailed to the Head of Department (fse.bio-hod@mq.edu.au) before the closing date: 31st March.
Australian Coral Reef Society student research awards
Up to $4000 for field or lab research on coral reefs, especially if involving time on Heron Island. See ACRS website for details. Applications close 2 April 2021.
Graduate Women NSW travelling scholarship
Australian citizen/PR only; must hold a degree from University of Sydney; see GWNSW website.
Up to $12,000 awarded to a woman to undertake a short period of advanced research or coursework in any field. Applications close 8 April 2021.
Wildlife Disease Association (online) conference student awards
See Wildlife Disease website. Virtual conference will be held 31 August to 2 September 2021. The following awards are available: best student presentation (USD$350), best student poster (USD$350), student award in collaboration with the International Associated of Aquatic Animal Medicine (USD$1500). Award applicants must be association members; abstract submissions close 18 April 2021.
